Thornley and Wheatley Hill Community Woodland
Overview of what's happening
Together with our partners, North East Community Forest, we are creating a brand-new green space between the villages of Thornley and Wheatley Hill for everyone to enjoy.
This new community woodland, planted with native broadleaf trees will include paths, open spaces filled with wildflowers, and new areas for people to enjoy outdoor activities. (The picture above is an illustrative view of what this will look like when the proposed woodland is established.)
The woodland will provide an important home for wildlife and a welcoming green space for nature, walks and fresh air.
We'd like to hear what you think about the draft plan for the woodland, so that we can understand what matters most to local people, identify anything we should be aware of, and explore ways for the community to enjoy and get involved with the woodland in the future.

When will work begin?
Tree planting will take place during the 2027/28 winter planting season. Trees will be planted by local volunteers, school children and contractors working on behalf of the council. Once planted, the trees will be protected from rabbits and deer using tree guards and fencing where needed.
How can I get involved?
There will be many opportunities for local people to get involved in planting the new woodland, supported by the council and the project partners. As the woodland grows, the project aims to help the community play an active role in caring for, developing and enjoying the site for years to come.
