Spennymoor Pride in Place

During July and August 2026, we are going to be in various locations and at meetings talking to people about the projects planned for the area. See below for where we will be and come and talk to us.

Why Spennymoor is now part of Pride in Place

Communities and local organisations have been working with us to develop a Strategic Place Plan for Spennymoor town centre. The introduction of Pride in Place by the government has created an opportunity to move this project to become part of the Pride in Place programme.

The government's Gov.uk: Pride in Place Programme will see up to £20 million of investment and support over the next 10 years (from 2026) to 284 communities across the country to make long term improvements.

In County Durham, four areas have been selected to receive Pride in Place funding including Spennymoor which will run from 2024- 2034.

The new themes include:

• Regeneration, high streets and heritage
• Housing
• Work, productivity and skills
• Cohesion
• Community Power
• Health and wellbeing
• Transport
• Safety and security
• Education and opportunity

Engaging communities in Spennymoor town centre

In March to May 2024, we asked for views on a new long-term plan for the town in our first round of engagement for this project. The plan focused on:

• High streets, heritage and regeneration
• Transport and connectivity
• Safety and security including sport, arts or cultural activities for young people

In July and August 2024, we attended a number of events and community centres throughout Spennymoor to share and talk to people about all the feedback we had received, details can be found at Consultation on a long term plan for Spennymoor .

As a response to your feedback, we have have also approved a change to the previous area boundary map (to incorporate Byers Green and Kirk Merrington) which also forms part of the new Local Network.

In October 2024, the new Government confirmed that the Long Term Plan for Towns (LTPT) programme would continue, and working alongside local and devolved government will become the Plan for Neighbourhoods.

The areas of focus were extended to include:

• housing
• work, productivity and skills
• community cohesion (community spirit)
• health and wellbeing
• education and opportunity.

We listened to your views and ideas as to how you would like to see the town develop over the next 10 years the town.

This helped us to add additional actions to the long term plan for Spennymoor.

What's happened so far

Between 2024 and 2026, we have been out and about in the community:

• listening to your views and ideas,
• considering your feedback,
• showing you and talk about the projects which are being developed following what you told us at previous engagement events.
