Former Elvet bowling green regeneration

Background

We are proposing to install outdoor fitness equipment for all ages in the area of green space to the south east of Durham City at Elvet Waterside, known as the former bowling green along Durham Riverbanks.

The equipment will cater for a range of fitness interests including cardio, strength training and cross training as well fun things for children to enjoy.

This area of the riverbank is heavily used as part of Durham City's leisure and tourism activities. Installing this state of the art equipment will allow us to provide more opportunities for leisure, make the area more accessible for everyone, and is part of the wider regeneration of this area.

About the equipment

When new developments occurs, the developers must put some money towards community and social improvements in the area. This funding is commonly known as the Section 106 Fund. In December 2024 we successful received funding for this project from the Section 106 Community Fund for Elvet and Gilesgate.

The funding will be used to provide opportunities for physical activity and enjoyment for people of all ages, including children, teenagers, adults, and older adults.

It will offer:

  • a variety of high quality outdoor gym apparatus, with accessible fitness options for people with a disability, pregnant women and new mothers
  • a special feature running track
  • a children's obstacle course which will include monkey bars for play and fun
  • new seating and benches for people to sit and enjoy the area
  • new accessible footpaths

There area will also retain green spaces for general play, exercise and enjoyment.

Have your say

We want your views on what type of equipment we should install from a variety of options.

We also want to make sure that people know where they can find and use the new equipment. We aim to increase visibility and awareness of the area and for this reason will give the location a recognisable name.

We would therefore like your views on what we should call the former Elvet bowling green.

Have your say

25 June 2025 - 15 July 2025

We now have detailed plans to share on the options for outdoor gym equipment to be installed in this area and welcome your views.

We will be:

  • contacting a range of groups and partners to discuss the gym equipment to gather views from key voices and interested parties, including resident groups and younger people
  • directly contacting residents living in the immediate area to invite them to take part in this consultation
  • holding a consultation event at Elvet Waterside where we will share proposed design options for the equipment

We will use all the feedback to inform the selection of the gym equipment and will discuss this with the chosen supplier of the equipment.
