Interactive Local Habitat Map - comment on mapped measures

Provide feedback on mapped measures within the Local Habitat Map. The map shows where each of the measures could be delivered to provide the greatest benefit for nature recovery across County Durham.

The process of mapping measures and creating the Local Habitat Map was led by the Environmental Records Centre North East with support from our Ecology team and included regular feedback from habitat and species specialists and the working groups established during the development phase.

How to take part

Enter the draft Local Habitat Map and familiarise yourself with how to switch the different layers on and off, how to identify different land areas and the information which is included in the pop up for each land area. There are instructions on the homepage of the map on how to use it.

Commenting on a location which has been mapped for species and/or habitat conservation

  1. Pick the species / habitat map layer that you want to comment on (top left box)
  2. Identify the location (land parcel) by zooming into the area on the map.
  3. Click on a specific location (a green border will appear)- so the system can pick up the spatial coordinates.
  4. You can then read the information contained in the pop up box (right bottom corner)
  5. Click on the 'make a comment' link in the pop up box which takes you to a short form.
  6. If you want to comment on more than one area, repeat the exercise.

You can also:

  1. View the instructions on the map by clicking on the small box in the bottom right hand corner.
  2. Exit the map by clicking on the Let's Talk County Durham logo on the top left.

Please note: you are not able to provide comments on:

  • the Areas of Particular Importance for Biodiversity (APIB), shown as dark green on the map. These boundaries are set by DEFRA.
  • the Areas that Could Become (ACB) of particular importance for biodiversity. These are made up of the combined set of all the mapped measures and are shown as yellow on the map.

The closing date for comments is 18 January 2026.
